Turn on a dime, Viral Agile Change

Misunderstanding #1: We need a burning platform for change!

I attended the first of the series of webinars by Dr. Leandro Herrero. I am a keen practitioner of his “Viral Change” method in context with my other practices including Systems Thinking, Complexity Science (Cynefin), LeSS for organizational descaling.

The first misunderstanding that Dr. Herrero talked about is that change requires a burning platform. Yes, history has shown that for intrinsic change to happen you do need to have some kind of crisis – so either an external crisis or a proactively created internal crisis is helpful to draw people towards aligned change. But, it is not a pre-requisite. If you are proactive and want to set up mechanisms to change ahead of the curve, you could really start a revolution and having mechanisms to bringing together people to create cultural change. No preconditions are required, and it is a better place to start than in a crisis – a situation in which you are already at a disadvantage and therefore you dont have the ability to work from a position of strength.

Tomorrow, we shall talk about the another misunderstanding..
